Pride and Prejudice Week - The Locations from the Films

The cottage is well placed to visit a number of the locations which featured in both the film and BBC versions of Pride and Prejudice. In this guide you will find details of seven excursions which together give you the information necessary for an entire Pride and Prejudice Week. Alternatively you could restrict yourself to just one or two of the visits on our list and save the rest for another stay with us.

Chatsworth House

Chatsworth House was used for the exteriors and some interiors of Pemberley, Mr Darcy’s house in the film. Chatsworth is about an hour’s drive away and well worth a visit.

Haddon Hall is a fine medieval hall was used as the set for the inn at Lambton and its dinning room was used as Elizabeth’s bedroom in the film. You could combine a visit with a trip to Bakewell to try one of the famous Bakewell puddings (not Bakewell tarts which are quite different)

Burghley House is just off the A1 near Stamford. Depending on traffic it is about an hour and a half’s drive. It was used as the home of Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the film and Stamford itself was used for the village of Meryton .Together they would make an excellent day out.

Lyme Park in Cheshire is a little further away but makes a pleasant day out driving through the Peak District National Park. Lyme Park was used by the BBC for the exterior of Pemberley in the television series and you can also see the famous pool where Mr Darcy took his swim.

Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire is also well worth a visit. It is about an hours drive and was used by the BBC for some of the interior locations of Pemberley. There is also a museum of childhood which is fun for children of all ages.

Red House Stables Working Carriage Museum is located at Darley Dale near Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. It supplied horse drawn carriages for the film. Visitors can book rides and imagine themselves visiting Pemberley with Elizabeth Bennet. Again this trip could be combined with a visit to Bakewell or Buxton or indeed Matlock

Finally, to complete your experience of a Pride and Prejudice week, Belton House, just outside Grantham is not to be missed. It can be reached in less than an hour’s drive along the A52. It was used as Rosings, the home of Lady Catherine in the BBC series. It is owned by the National Trust and has an excellent adventure playground for children.
